What is Operating System and how is iOS different from other Operating Systems?

If we understand in simplest terms, then an operating system is there which is situated between you (user) and a physical device (machine). This software interprets the commands of the applications and it provides access to those apps which are the features of the device such as multi-touch screen or storage.

Mobile operating systems such as iOS differ from other operating systems because in this they keep each app in their own protective shell , so that the apps stay away from each other and cannot tamper each other.

This makes it impossible for a virus to infect these apps. In a mobile operating system, however, other types of malware do exist. These protective shells which are around the apps also pose other limitations as they keep the apps away from communicating directly with each other.

iOS however uses a different feature called extensibility, which gives approval to the app to communicate with other apps.
